On a previous post I discussed the importance of public education. Any opportunity to increase community awareness of home fire sprinklers will help to increase the public's perception of risk, and it serves as an opportunity to develop advocacy at the grassroots level.
Recently, Murray City Fire in Utah conducted a Home Fire Sprinkler Education Event for the public. It involved a live house fire demonstration in a sprinklered vs. a non-sprinklered home. Murray City Fire, the Department of Public Safety, with the support of Fire Engineering, and Utah Fire and Rescue Academy came together to express the critical importance of home fire sprinklers as the technology that can save lives and reduce property damage. They are to be commended for their efforts.
The burn received media attention, and as a result, community awareness was increased. These types of events are vital to illustrate, first hand, the importance of home fire sprinklers. A Side-by-side demonstation will bring the point "home" more than any other activity, in many experts' opinion.
To obtain a side-by-side kit, visit the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition. Education and awareness remains the number one, most important activity, in order to obtain support from your community as you work to adopt home fire sprinkler requirements.
Another vital component of community awareness involves identifying local, respected, community leaders who can become advocates and who will work alongside the fire service to develop grassroots support.
The Fire Sprinkler Initiative® has been developed to assist you in making the case for home fire spinklers. Please visit our site often and navigate through it; it is always being updated to reflect the changing environment, to highlight successes, and to provide you with the tools you need.
