From the NFPA Expo floor: conversations with customers

The Product Innovation Team is a new presence at the NFPA booth this year. The pace has been brisk. We have seen a steady stream of engaged NFPA members and customers throughout the Expo. Our station is littered with all manner of mobile devices displaying a number of new digital products including mobile apps, e-books, optimization for the NFCSS iPad experience and a new prototype for a code citation tool.

While our focus is "digital first," we are also showing off the prototype for code-based print products to help support installation and customer education for LP tank storage. NFPA is developing solutions to help our customers at each step in their sales cycle.

Feedback has been positive, and there are a few themes that emerged from this year's conversations:

  • Members are excited about the concept of the Innovation team. There is a pent-up demand for new products, and many are looking to NFPA to develop solutions.
  • The new IP-based pricing is really resonating with buyers. As people use more tools like tablet PCs and smartphones, they see the need for content in a variety of formats. The discounted pricing for bundled code / PDF and handbook / PDF is solving a real customer problem.
  • Visualization is also a pervasive theme. Members are looking for easier ways to understand complex code issues, and the new digital formats offer a capacity that doesn't exist in the print editions. Early indications are our upcoming virtual walk throughs will be popular.

It has also been a great experience meeting with so many NFPA advocates. Because our team is new to the Association, the innovation team benefits from the opportunity to connect with long-time members.
