Dick Van DykeThe recent vehicle fire experienced by Dick Van Dyke has brought attention to some of the great fire safety public service ads he did for NFPA back in the late 1980s. MSN is featuring NFPA’s “Crawl Low Under Smoke” public service ad (psa) starring Dick Van Dyke. While the message has been updated to “get low and go under smoke”, the old psa is still entertaining and gets the message across. Do you remember any of the other ads NFPA created with Dick Van Dyke?

In reviewing the NFPA clothes dryer safety tips sheet recently, I was reminded that some years ago–before I joined the Public Education Division of NFPA, of course–I failed time and again to follow the tip that says, “Clean the lint filter before and after each load of laundry.” I was renting a room from my sister’s mother-in-law, Ann, and unfamiliar with the location of the lint filter on her dryer. The filter was at the back of the machine; I was used to the filter being in the front, along the lip of the rotating drum.  As a result, I’d forget to check it.

It took a few stern admonitions from Ann for me to form better habits when it came to her clothes dryer. Checking the lint filter is one of many tips that can prevent a clothes dryer fire. View our clothes dryer and washing machine safety information, and all of our tips sheets.
