Now the celebration for older adults begins.National Senior Center Month is celebrated every September. It’s a time when senior centers shine the spotlight on career fairs, financial and health fitness workshops, expos, and lifelong learning classes they offer. Centers expect higher attendance than usual from older adults, which provides a great opportunity to reach a sizable number of people with NFPA’s Remembering When program.

Remembering When, centered around 16 key safety messages – eight fire prevention and eight fall prevention, was designed to be implemented by a coalition comprising the local fire department, service clubs, social and religious organizations, retirement communities, and others.

You can download the program and supporting materials free from the NFPA website or, for a nominal fee, we’ll print out all 106 pages in full color and ship them to you. Either way, you’ll play an important role in making National Senior Center Month, and fire and fall prevention, memorable.

Smoke Alarm Pledge image
NFPA, LEGOLAND Florida and LEGOLAND California Resort launch the 2014 Smoke Alarm Pledge today. Between September 2nd and October 5th, anyone who fills in the submission form (found on www.nfpa.org/smokealarmpledge or NFPA's Facebook page) agrees to take the “Smoke Alarm Pledge.” This pledge states that you will test each of your home’s smoke alarms each month to ensure they are working. Working smoke alarms save lives making this an important initiative, as well as the theme for this year's Fire Prevention Week.

This downloadable and printable Smoke Alarm Pledge is a helpful reminder for you and your family members.

By taking the Pledge, you will be entered into the NFPA, LEGOLAND Florida and LEGOLAND California Resort Sweepstakes. One randomly selected grand prize winner will win a trip for four to either LEGOLAND Florida or LEGOLAND California Resort (winner’s choice), including admission tickets, airfare and hotel accommodations. Ten randomly selected runners up will win four admission tickets to their choice of park. Please see official rules for details.

Thank you and good luck!

Cooking
As many of you know, NFPA is a really great resource for information about cooking fire safety. Our web pages provide all kinds of materials for families and fire professionals and teachers alike. Today I'm happy to report that we've updated our cooking safety web pages and invite you to review them. It's the same great content, only organized a bit differently to make it easier to find what you're looking for (and with a few twists added in).

We've got a page that highlights all of our videos, and special pages on holiday cooking and grilling. We've even got a page that focuses on reports and statistics about cooking fires and safety, and codes and standards related to cooking. You can find all of this information and much more including tip sheets and checklists right at your fingertips.

Take a look today and see for yourself! Then let us know what you think. As we shift  gears into fall and with (I dare say!) the holidays in our sights, take advantage of our newest web pages to find what you need to make all of your cooking experiences the best (and safest) they can be!

But not all fire departments have the means to purchase the supplies. That’s where grants can help. A few years ago, the Mississippi State Fire Marshal’s Office applied for and was awarded about $2 million in FEMA Fire Prevention and Safety Grants to purchase more than 88,000 smoke alarms. More than 52,000 alarms have been installed. The program continues.

“Without grant funding, this project would not have been possible and annual fire fatalities would have been unchanged,” says Mississippi State Fire Marshal’s Office Fire Safety Education Officer Tammy Peavy.”

You can read more about the impact the installation program has had on the state’s fire death rate and other keys to success in NFPA’s Planning & Implementing a Successful Smoke Alarm Installation Program.
