Football season prompts reminder about grilling safety at tailgating parties this fall

Tailgating 2Doesn't it feel like we were just talking about summer grilling parties? I thought so, until this past weekend when I started seeing television advertisements highlighting the fall football season! Time does fly by, I know, but we should never forget the basics of fire safety no matter what time of the year it is.

As the ads suggest, weekend afternoons will soon be spent packing up the car with blankets and coolers along with the portable hibachis and grills en route to attending tailgating parties and cheering on our favorite teams. Here at NFPA we remind everyone that the same safety precautions we urged you to consider this summer are the same when it comes to using the grill in a parking lot at your favorite stadium. Keep in mind the following:

  • Be on alert! If you have or are consuming alcohol, please don’t use the grill or hibachi
  • Never, ever leave your grill or hibachi left unattended
  • Keep anything that can catch fire — food packaging, towels, blankets — away from your grill or hibachi
  • Keep children and pets at least three three feet away from grill

Find out more about cooking safely on NFPA's cooking safety web pages. More specifically, find these and other great grilling tips to live by this football season on our updated grilling safety pages.

Fall is a great time to put forth our best game face but remember ... always keep friends and family safety first and foremost in your mind. Go team!!
