The 7th annual Falls Prevention Awareness Day is being observed Tuesday, September 23rd, the first day of fall. Forty-eight states and the National Falls Free® Initiative, led by the National Council on Aging, are championing the cause.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), every 14 seconds an older adult is treated in an emergency room for a fall; every 29 minutes an older adult dies following a fall.
Falls Prevention Awareness Day highlights the importance of older adults and their support communities learning how to reduce fall risks.  A great way to be part of the effort is through implementing NFPA’s Remembering When program, developed with the CDC to help older adults live safely at home for as long as possible. Getting started is easy. The Remembering When program book, fire prevention message cards, fall prevention message cards and other materials can be downloaded for free from the NFPA website. Or for a nominal fee, NFPA will print out all 106 pages in full folor and ship them to you.
