The Oklahoma City Fire Department Fire Marshal’s office is sending a powerful message with its wall of fame. The display isn’t in honor of individual achievement, but the work of a fire safety device.

The smoke alarms on display actually sounded and saved lives in Oklahoma City. Some are burned, some are melted, but all were working and did their job. The fire department uses the wall of fame as a springboard to a conversation with the public about smoke alarm safety:

    • Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement.

    • Interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the home for the best protection. When one sounds, they all sound.

    • Test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button.

    • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.

More smoke alarm information, including safety tips sheets in English and Spanish can be found on the NFPA website.
