The NFPA Chairman of the Board, Ernest Grant, serves as chair of the Rolf H. Jensen Memorial Public Education Grant committee. Each year, he and the other committee members screen applications for the grant, which provides $5,000 to a fire department–career or volunteer–located in the United States or Canada to support a community-wide fire and life safety education program or campaign.
The application deadline is February 6, 2015. Here are the chairman’s responses to questions I asked about the grant process.
LB: What is the most rewarding part of serving on this committee?
EG: I get to see dozens of applications from fire and life safety experts who are enthusiastic about what they do, people who realize the importance of expanding the service they’re providing in their communities.
LB: Some people are hesitant to apply because they don’t have grant writing experience.What do you say to them?
EG: Don’t be put off by the application process. I can’t overemphasize that. Get the experience of applying. We are looking for applications that show clearly stated goals and objectives that will have a significant impact on a community.
LB: Is it worthwhile for an applicant not awarded the grant to continue pursuing it?
EG: Yes. If you don’t win this year, there’s always the possibility of next year.
