It was a beautiful day on the Cape this past Saturday, the kind of day that entices you to spend every waking hour outside by the pool or at the beach, or in the backyard cooking up some great eats on the grill with friends and family.

To that end, NFPA staff and firefighters from the Dennis Fire & Rescue Department spent a couple of hours together with our friends from the Stop & Shop store in Dennis, MA talking to customers and handing out materials in an effort to raise awareness about healthy, safe grilling, and to help ensure everyone enjoys the summer and reduces their risk of grilling fires. In addition to all the great tips that were on hand, Beach Plum Chef of Cape Cod provided grilling demonstrations and handed out samples of some fantastic, healthy food for customers to try. While nearly half of the people who grill do so year-round, July is the peak month for grill fires, followed by May, June and August. So this summer, do your part. Make fire safety a top priority for you and your family. Find out how at www.nfpa.org/grilling.

In the meantime, if you happen to be visiting Rhode Island this coming weekend (Saturday, July 18 to be exact), join us at our next great grilling fire safety event at the Stop & Shop in Narragansett. We hope to see you there!

The fire marshal’s office rents three booths and turns them into one large exhibition area. Space is set aside for a screen which shows Sparky and other fire prevention videos. The gubernatorial proclamation and the FPW poster are displayed. Tables are filled with FPW brochures, coloring books, stickers, magnets and other items.

State Fire Marshal's Office Public Information Officer Steve Holmes says the days set aside at the fair to highlight different audiences help his office get the attention of attendees with fire prevention !http://nfpa.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8351b9f3453ef01b7c7ac171c970b-320wi|src=http://nfpa.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8351b9f3453ef01b7c7ac171c970b-320wi|alt=DSC_0387 (3)|style=margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px;|title=DSC_0387 (3)|class=asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d8351b9f3453ef01b7c7ac171c970b img-responsive!materials.

“One specific day is for elementary-age school children,” he said. “That day we provide bags for the teachers filled with state and NFPA fire prevention materials. Sparky visits with the kids and poses for photos. One day is Special Friends Day.  Sparky is again a big hit for our folks with varying abilities. They enjoy the ‘live’ Sparky and his giveaways and viewing the DVD’s of Sparky and friends. One day and night are devoted to senior citizens and we tailor the items on the table to their interests, while interacting and engaging with as many of them as we can in conversations about saving lives through fire prevention.”

Holmes says throughout the entire fair the Fire Prevention Week banner is the backdrop, helping to establish the FPW theme in the minds of everyone who happens to stop by the exhibit.
