Fire Prevention Week 2016 marks the 14th year in a row that Hilton Head Island Fire

Rescue’s Fire and Life Safety Educator Cinda Seamon has gone to the FPW website

to download the sample proclamation for the mayor’s signature. She says she couldn’t

imagine handling this task any other way.

“NFPA has the good information I need. The wording is good,” she says. “Why reinvent the
wheel?”

Each year she downloads the proclamation and submits it to the mayor’s office. A presentation

by Mayor David Bennett with the framed proclamation is scheduled for the  October 4th town

council meeting. Proclamation signing ceremonies are a great photo opportunity  for the media

and provide valuable exposure for fire departments. “The mayor will read it at the meeting and

proclaim Fire Prevention Week. A lot of our crews will come up and accept it,” Cinda says.

The FPW website offers numerous ways to promote this year’s campaign, including a press release,

Facebook and Twitter messages, a letter to the editor, videos, and community outreach ideas.

Cinda says the town council meeting should be well attended, reminding dozens of residents
of this year’s theme: “Don’t Wait–Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years.”
