Did you know that firefighters used their beards as air filtration devices? Or that long ago they competed for the right to fight a fire? “Firefighting’s Weird History and Fascinating Future,” the newest video on Sparky School House, includes these strange legends, along with current practices and anticipated future firefighting techniques.

The video chronicles the use of modern tools, such as GPS and thermal imaging, and describes the place of drones and robotics in the future.

A companion piece to the video is a downloadable standards-aligned classroom lesson plan for grades 2 to 5 that includes an informational text and related discussion questions.
