While hundreds of emergency workers were recently at the North Carolina Emergency Operations Center dealing with Hurricane Matthew’s destruction, they were reminded to make sure their homes were safe from fire. Fire Prevention Specialist Jan Parker, with the North Carolina Office of the State Fire Marshal and member of the NFPA Public Education Network reminded her emergency partners to check the date on their smoke alarms and replace them every 10 years.

She made sure that Fire Prevention Week materials and other safety information were placed in the emergency management center break room. “I was pleased that many of the busy emergency workers took time to talk about important fire safety messages and how to improve fire safety in their own homes,” Parker said.
