Last week more than 12,000 radio stations were sent two public service announcements (PSAs) reminding listeners "Don't Wait. Check the Date. Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years." As you may know, this message is the theme for this year's Fire Prevention Week campaign, which will take place October 9-15.
We have heard great feedback from stations about the PSAs - some thanking us for sending important fire safety messaging along and others asking for interviews to delve further into the key role that smoke alarms play in keeping people and property safe from fire. The interest in the smoke alarm PSAs hailed from different geographic areas and different sized radio markets - places similar to where you work and live. Another great thing about these PSAs is that they are evergreen - meaning they can run year round.
We encourage fire officials and local public educators to reach out to radio promotions directors, community programming managers, on-air talent and others in your area (including businesses that may want to feature the PSA as part of their on-hold message). You can access the 15-second and 30-second PSAs on NFPA's Promoting Fire Prevention Week pages along with an official proclamation, a press release, an infographic, social media content, partnership ideas, videos and community outreach suggestions.
Audiences receive messages in a variety of ways, and this year's Fire Prevention Week materials were designed with that idea in mind.
