BiographyI manage NFPA's Wildfire Division. My team is dedicated to wildfire safety education, advocacy and outreach. NFPA’s wildfire-related projects cover a broad spectrum of safety education, advocacy and training as well as international outreach. Its national Firewise USA program now reaches 1.5 million residents of more than 1,400 communities in 40 states. Its Wildfire Community Preparedness Day campaign, launched in 2013, is an annual event in which hundreds of communities in the U.S. and Canada participate.
I have worked in the areas of natural hazards, land use planning, and disaster safety outreach since 1989. Previous employers have included the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS); the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) New England regional office; and the Massachusetts Flood Hazard Management Program. I am the author of numerous articles and technical documents on disaster safety and mitigation planning, and currently serve on the Executive Committee for a new American Planning Association membership division, Hazard Mitigation and Disaster Recovery Planning. I hold a BA in English and American Literature from Brandeis University and a Master of Urban Affairs from Boston University.
