Given the recent violence towards first responders, specifically law enforcement personnel, the discussion has bubbled up and gained traction regarding the need for fire fighters/EMS providers to be issued ballistic protection as part of their PPE. Currently it is up to the AHJ to determine whether or not ballistic protection is to be issued to personnel based on the type or frequency of hazard they will be exposed to. So if fire fighters/EMS providers are frequently or could potentially be frequently exposed to scenes of violence or unrest they are to be issued ballistic protection. If this is not the case then they do not need to be issued ballistic protection.
Well this issue was discussed at great length recently at a NFPA Fire Service Occupational Safety and Health committee meeting, and it would be great to learn if the audience thinks that ballistic protection should be issued to every fire fighter/EMS provider as part of their PPE or if it should just be issued to law enforcement personnel.
