I have to project a scholl in Nigeria, with a gymnasium inside. Please, are there some specific rules to be used for GYMANSIUM AREA?
Ing. Mirco Ficola - Italy
Mirco, Not sure if you are designing or inspecting the gymnasium. Either way, seating, including size, location, aisles, safety and guard rails, exitways in and out of the occupied space. Structural including equipment hanging from ceiling, light, ventilation, general hazards and safety. Fire resistance rating of materials--be sure if they are using pads on walls (for athletes to cushion their stops) the pads must be fire rated. There's always more, but this is a start. Buona fortuna.
Micro hear some codes and standards that may help answer some of your questions. NFPA 101 The Life Safety Code chapter on Public Assembly, NFPA 1 Fire Code, NFPA 5000 National Building Code, NFPA 54 National File Gas Code, NFPA 70 National Electrical Code, NFPA 90A & 90B Standard for the Installation of Air-Conditioning &Ventilation Systems, Standard for the Installation of Warm Air Heating & Air-Conditioning Systems, NFPA 105 Standard for Smoke Door Assemblies & Other Opening Protectives, NFPA 204 Standard for Smoke & Heat Venting, and NFPA 258 Recommended Pratice for Determining Smoke Generation of Solid Materials. International Building Code, International Fire Code, International File Code, International Mechanical Code. Hope this information helps and is not too confusing.

The fire safety systems for a gymnasium are plenty as stated by some members. For very specific answers to your enquiry, a floor plan, sectional drawing and overall floor place of the school will be required as a minimum. You can contact me in private message and email me your drawings. I have a look, then I tell you exactly the requirements.
