Can an explosion proof light fixture be modified, 150w HPS to self ballasting mercury vapor lamp?
Electrical equipment intended for use in hazardous areas should be Ex. I think it's OK if the new lamp explosive-proof grade is same to the old one.
Typically explosion proof light fixtures are certified from the factory as an assembly, so you are saying it is alright to modify a certified explosion proof light fixture?
Howard, when you speak of the fixture as being certified from the factory I am assuming you are referring to the UL listing. If this is the case modifications to the assembly do affect the certification as to the fixtures suitability for a specific application.
I have included a link below for your reference but as to your original question about using a self-ballasted lamp...I do not know if that would be considered as a modification to the fixture. However, the assembly was certified using a specific lamp. As an example, If the temperature specification on the self-ballasted lamp were higher than the original then I could see where it would affect the listing.
Thanks for the link, the summary pretty much sums it up!
