Fire Marshal's Office receives NACo Award for innovative Risk Check fire inspection program
(Port Orchard, WA) – Due to exceptional results and unique innovations, The Kitsap County Fire Marshal’s Office was granted a 2016 Achievement Award “Best of Category” from The National Association of Counties (NACo) for their new Risk Check Program!
Beginning in 2015 the Fire Marshal’s office saw a significant increase in the business/commercial fire inspections under their responsibility, due to expiring interlocal agreements with local fire districts. This created a large challenge to meet the county’s fire safety needs. The Fire Marshal’s office created the Risk Check Program, an inspection program that prioritizes business inspections based upon their specific risks. Each business is assigned a unique risk assessment score that represents an evaluation of the specific fire hazard, life safety, and community impact risks against mitigating conditions present including; fire sprinklers, fire alarms, fire resistive construction and the response capabilities of the local fire department. Inspection priority and frequency of inspection is assigned based on the Risk Check score.
“By inspecting our most at risk and critical infrastructures first, we are efficiently utilizing our resources and prioritizing them to make the most meaningful impact on the community,” said David Lynam, Kitsap County Fire Marshal. “Customer feedback on the new program has been positive, owners appreciate the concept of targeting occupancies with higher fire risks and rewarding those with more effective mitigation strategies and components,” he said.
No other program exists that assigns fire inspections frequencies based upon individual evaluation of specific occupancy risks, mitigation and the effect that the loss of the occupancy will have on the community. The Fire Marshal Office works directly with customers, and one large element of this program’s success is providing businesses with the tools to pass inspections and reducing re-inspections.
