I’m working on a hospital project. I want to know what kind of automatic protection system can I use in operating rooms according with NFPA.
Sprinklers. Yes, those ones that discharges water automatically when there's a fire. Plus they are required by code (NFPA 101).
Don't be fooled by some vendors/contractors telling that a total flooding clean agent system is required (I have met those on several occasions). All water leakage I have seen so far in hospitals were from the domestic, HVAC or even the drainage pipings. If there's a concern about a janitor or an electrician breaking a sprinkler's bulb and have some expensive equipment damaged by water, then a preaction system could be considered.
