This question relates to an existing single family dwelling that has had a new heating unit installed and was inspected by the fire inspector. The fire inspectors question to me was can we require the installation of a sprinkler head over the heating unit or at the very least require the installation of sheetrock over this area.

I find nothing within NFPA or IRC that requires anything if the minimum clearances are established.

This is in a full cellar not a separate boiler or furnace room and is residential use only and our town has no separate code adopted that covers this area.

Any thoughts.
