Does anybody know the preference of shift schedule for firefighters, particularly for industrial fire brigade which in some cases will be similar for operator shift schedule?
Facility Fire brigades are governed by NFPA 600 - (2015) , which , in Section 4 , identifies in multiple locations the requirement for Management to evaluate local conditions and hazards, identify shifts for which the brigade is available, facilitate participation in company safety and health committees and establish standard safety protocol and a risk management policy, including job related physical performance.
Hence it is managements responsibility ( as with all other job related activities ) to ensure a safe and healthy workplace, including issues with extended or diverse shift.
As a comment - fire brigades are composed ( in many instances ) of employees who are assigned tasks other than fire suppression, and as such are " on duty " for other purposes. The fire response duties are merely an extension of activities which management has deemed "safe" in other shift work.
Finally - I may comment that there are a multitude of professions which are establishing HOURS OF WORK restrictions. These are for the most part in place after 16 hours of consecutive service ( where reaction time has deadened).
