I need to know where in NFPA 72 is the requirement to install automatic smoke detectors in a residential apartment building. I'm guessing it's in there since I can't find the requirement in the Massachusetts building code.
It starts in the Mass building code Where required.
it also depends a great deal on what year the building was built.
could be 907.5.2.3.1
public and common areas
now this applies to buildings built today
You have to referee to the Building Codes for that. The AHJ for the applicable building might have their own codes and standard to when it is required to install detectors in certain rooms or not so you might want to check that first.
NFPA 101 section 30.3.4 talks about the requirements of Detection, Alarm and Communication Systems for New Apartment Buildings.
NFPA 72 will generally provide you with the instillation requirements more than when it is applicable for a type of occupancy.
NFPA 72 will tell you how to install smoke alarms and systems, but NFPA 101 will tell you when you need a fire alarm system (or not) and where you need smoke alarms. NFPA 101 does note times where new apartment buildings do not need fire alarm system, but will still require smoke alarms. We see problems with this when someone calls a tradesman and tells them they need something, typically installers (electrician, fire alarm tech, sprinkler companies) do not know the requirements that drive the need for a particular system. This is likely even more true in states where some of the trades are not required to be licensed.
