Vents in Kitchen firewalls

There is a vent in the firewall of my kitchen and a vent in my bathroom which backs on the neighboring kitchen.  The landlord has started eviction proceedings because I covered the vents.  My best guess is that the vents are for the moisture from the pipes serving the kitchen sink and the pipes serving the bathroom.  Can I defend myself (successfully) in court by saying that firewalls should not have vents in them?
