Interconnected Floor Fire Sprinkler Zoning

It seem to be industry standard in my area that the space above a floor opening be protected by the floor system below. (i.e., In a 2 story building the space above a floor opening between levels 1 and 2 would be protected from the level 1 system).


While I understand the logic behind this, It seem impractical to route piping to the upper levels of an atrium or interconnected floor space. I have tried to find a code reference for this type of situation but can not locate anything. 


Can anyone clarify the fire sprinkler zoning in this type of application? code reference?
