We own an 8 unit apartment building that was build circa 1950. It has 2 units on the walk out basement level and 3 stories above that with 2 units per level. We had a tenant leave something on the stove which resulted in smoke but no damage and the fire department to be called to the location. My property manager advises that the fire marshal told him that a monitored fire alarm system was required in the building and gave 30 days in which to install the system.
We have a monitored fire alarm system at another property. It has amounted to a roughly $3,000 annual expense and has been nothing but trouble. Really I would like to remove this system and just use pull stations and local unmonitored alarms. After all, everyone has a phone these days.
What requirement exists for a monitored fire alarm?
