Does NFPA require fire protection piping (risers, pipes, etc) to be painted red?
Nothing that I have ever run across. I have had AHJ's reference 6.3.11 (13-16' Ed.) stating that by painting the piping the requirements of this section and the required pipe identification is obscured thus not installed per standards. We have to submit the paperwork from the fab shop indicating the pipe type.
Like previous answer AHJ like NYC does require it as well as color coding FDC to show system type. I do work in several jurisdictions and sometimes paint FDC which the inspecting Fire marshal usually laughs and makes comment NYC is the only place that requires that
