I just started working for a new company and am working on getting the Plant compliant with NFPA 70E, no one knows if or when an infered scan has ever been done.
Philip, NFPA 70E, 2015 Article 205.3 gives us the general requirement that electrical equipment shall be maintained in accordance with the manufacturers' instructions or industry consensus standards. While the NFPA 70E deals with safe work practices, the maintenance of electrical equipment is the function of NFPA 70B.
NFPA 70B, 2013 Chapter 11 "Testing and Test Methods" paragraph 11.17 uses non-mandatory language and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of infrared testing.
In paragraph 11.17.5 we find the following "Routine infrared inspections of energized electrical systems should be performed annually prior to shutdown. More frequent infrared inspections, for example, quarterly or semiannually, should be performed where warranted by loss experience, installation of new electrical equipment, or changes in the environmental, operational, or load conditions."
An IR camera is available at the facility I work at and we use it anytime maintenance is scheduled on electrical equipment and the interval depends on the equipment. We use it more often in our MOC procedures on electrical equipment that has had components replaced or changes to load conditions.
I hope this helps to arrive at the answer you are looking for.
Thank you Steve, that was exactly what i was needing to know.
