I suspended ceiling is removed for remodel, can the sprinklers be left as is?

During remodels, the contractor needs to remove the suspended ceiling for access to HVAC. The sprinklers are left as is, thus no heat collector and sprinklers are impaired. Some FPEs think we should require the sprinklers to be rotated up to within 12 inches of the deck and replaced with uprights until the construction is complete, at which time the ceiling would be replaced, the sprinklers rotated back down, and new pendants installed. Any thoughts?
