Canada permits both prescriptive and alternative solutions for code compliance. Many solutions have been developed over the years. Has anyone put together a repository for these solutions particularly regarding life safety.
The only thought I had; there may be some design solution repositories at the architectural/engineering colleges. I have used some websites at Cornell to research some alternate solutions for life safety compliance.
I would review sections 4.4.2 and 4.4.3 of NFPA 101 which gives guidance on prescriptive based or performance based options for life safety compliance.
I addition to Dallas's point. The International Code Council has a listing of products evaluated for compliance to the prescriptive consensus codes. Where a particular product used as an alternative to the prescriptive building code, you can consult the ICC-ES listing reports.
Code officials routinely require proof of compliance of products with applicable requirements of the IBC. This proof needs to come from an approved agency. ICC-ES is the most readily accepted agency in the nation.
