We are replacing our Halon Clean Agent fire suppression system with a more environmentally friendly Sapphire Clean Agent system, but have not been able to come close to having the protected rooms pass an enclosure integrity test. The original Halon system was installed around 1988 or earlier, and at that time an enclosure integrity test was not required. The HVAC system which services the protected rooms also services adjacent rooms in the building. All the HVAC system ducting is above the suspended ceiling and in the event of a fire the HVAC system is shut down by the fire suppression system control unit. In addition to the clean agent protection, the area is also protected by a water sprinkler system.
I am wondering what our options are in order for the new system to pass inspection.
Is it possible to have the room integrity test waived?
Is it still acceptable to use a full discharge tests to determine the Clean Agent Hold Time?
Is there an alternative way that we can calculate/demonstrate that the Clean agent Hold time is acceptable?
Should the enclosure integrity test be mandatory, can the enclosure pressure test be carried out with a temporary air-tight barrier attached to the false ceiling?
Does the presence of fire protection water sprinkler system waive the requirement for the clean agent enclosure integrity pressure test?
We were having a third party install the Sapphire Clean Agent for us and I am not conversant with the NFPA code requirements.
