Does helmets expire after 10 years like all other PPE, if not When?
In short: Yes, if your department or State has adopted NFPA 1851 or feels that ignoring it opens them to liability and risk.
From NFPA 1851:
Structural fire fighting ensembles and ensemble elements shall be retired in accordance with 10.2.1 or 10.2.2, no more than 10 years from the date the ensembles or ensemble elements were manufactured.
A structural fire fighting protective ensemble includes, but is not limited to, garments, helmets, hoods, gloves, and footwear.
In addition to fire helmet retirement due to damage, NFPA 1851 2014 Edition, specifies that the fire helmet be retired 10 years after date of manufacture. The Cairns Fire Helmet Tracking Form should be used to maintain your helmet’s age and repair records. Your helmet must be retired when 10 years of age is reached. If parts have been replaced throughout the helmet's life, the helmet must be retired when its oldest component reaches 10 years.
