Gas heating unit / furnace in a classroom?

We have private school in our jurisdiction that has a number of classrooms where a gas heating unit or furnace has been installed.   I have had an HVAC installer and some mechanical reviewers at our building department look at them and they say they are properly installed according to the mechanical code.  We are questioning whether the Life Safety code would allow the arrangement.  This heating equipment sits in the common area of the classroom (not in a closet).  It is covered by a plywood and wood 'cover' for aesthetic reasons.   Would NFPA which requires separation from furnace rooms apply.  The building is not protected by a sprinkler system.   Thank you!!
