We have an existing hazardous area constructed as a smoke partition. The door protecting the area is a wood door, not fire resistance rated or labeled. In order to comply with the door gap clearances of NFPA 80, a door sweep is required to be installed. Are UL listed and noncombustible door sweeps required to be installed on the wood door, or can sweeps that are consistent with the protection provided by the wall and door be installed? A smoke partition is required to limit the transfer of smoke, not to provide an area free of smoke. In addition, the wood door is already a combustible item. Are bristle door sweeps that would limit the transfer of smoke, but still be combustible like the door, approved for installation on the non fire rated door? It would not make sense to require hardware to be installed that exceeds the capabilities of what the existing door and wall are actually provided.
