There has to be enough to protect it to NFPA 13, if that is the design standard you have to meet?
I would say it depends.
It looks like this is an existing building undergoing renovation according to the tag of your post. One important thing to note is that NFPA 13 does not tell you when to install an automatic sprinkler system. That requirement is left to existing building requirements of NFPA 101 Chapter 43 - Building Rehabilitation or maybe the building code. There are a number of defined categories of work that the building rehabilitation must comply with.
Any building undergoing repair, renovation, modification, orreconstruction shall comply with:
