Is it the requirement of the NFPA standards to have UL listed fire pump motors or are the requirements for single phase motors identified solely in NFPA 20 9.5.2 through 126.96.36.199 for compliance?
We are currently working on a commercial low rise project that had a phase convertor installed for a 3 phase fire pump ( converting to single phase electrical power supply) ( school office building- provided with full sprinkler protection 3 stories above grade).
The local authority has disapproved the installation and is advising that phase convertors shall not be utilized – ( we understand this position).
Single phase service only is available to the project. A listed fire pump and fire pump controller are available from manufacturers to provide adequate flow and pressure for the sprinkler system in the building however the manufacturer is advising that the motor is not UL listed specifically. (10 or 15 horsepower single phase)
