Hi, how to distinguish if a fire zone is separate from a smoke zone. Is there any clause in NFPA to set up or craft a fire zone in line with smoke zone!
Looks like you are working with NFPA 101 according to the tag you posted.
Excerpt from In Compliance
"There is sometimes confusion between the different types of walls, or barriers, used in NFPA 101®, Life Safety Code®, and when those barriers are required. The code lists three kinds of barriers: fire barriers, which are addressed in Section 8.3; smoke partitions, addressed in Section 8.4; and smoke barriers, which are addressed in Section 8.5. (The occupancy chapter may alter the requirements of Chapter 8, making them either more or less stringent.) It is important to understand that these barriers have different uses and requirements, and that the code states which is needed and where it is required."
Your question needs a lot of discovery of the facts before a meaningful answer can be found.
What design concerns do you have about when those barriers are required?
Dear Mr. Milton,
Thanks for the reply.
As per NFPA 101," 8.5.3 Fire Barrier Used as Smoke Barrier. A fire barrier shall be permitted to be used as a smoke barrier, provided that it meets the requirements of Section 8.5."
Just want to know, if the smoke zone is demarked by separate and not align with fire zone, are we meeting the requirements of code?
Eg: Say, there are 15 fire sprinkler zone with fire rated wall and fire rated curtain in a underground parking structure (Basement), and we have demarked only 03 smoke zone with smoke management system considered. Is it possible to meet the requirements of NFPA - 101 (8.5), by considering only 03 nos. of smoke zone in the said basement.
There are no NFPA 101 requirements in section 42.8 Parking Structure for subdividing the building into smoke compartments that require smoke barriers in accordance with 8.5 nor subdividing the building into fire zones in accordance with 8.3.
However, the term smoke zone is related to permitted smoke control systems complying with 7.2.3 in accordance with 184.108.40.206.4. Smokeproof enclosures using pressurization must comply with NFPA 92. Smoke zone is a term for the application of NFPA 92. The smokeproof enclosure fire barriers must comply with 220.127.116.11 of NFPA 92 and the smoke barrier as defined in NFPA 92.
