Dear Sir, we need to know if Is necessary to install sprinklers inside a skylight that is completely closed; Case # 1 or partially closed Case # 2?
(Please, see figures attached)
Section 9.3.16 of NFPA 13 (2019) allows sprinklers to be omitted where skylights are under 3 m². Since the skylights shown exceed 3 m², technically sprinklers are required, specially in case #2
However, in case #1 it can be argue that the polycarbonate plate acts as a ceiling, therefore sprinklers are not necessary. Regarding case #2, as the skylight have a small internal volume (in both width and depth), doing a performance based design (using CFAST/FDS or other simulation software) might able to demonstrate that sprinklers are not necessary.
