Under 1901 Emergency Apparatus it states each riding seat to have an SCBA with min of 4. Is it a requirement that the driver have a designated SCBA. Trying to interrupt.
I believe that yes the driver's position is required to have an SCBA available. As we learn more about the dangers of smoke, even outside an enclosed space the need for SCBA will likely only increase.
While NFPA 1500 does not explicitly identify each position that needs to have an SCBA, it does state:
"7.10.7* When engaged in any operation where members could encounter atmospheres that are IDLH or potentially IDLH, or where the atmosphere is undefined or hazardous (including overhaul), the fire department shall provide and require all members to use SCBA that has been certified as being compliant with NFPA 1981".
As an all-hazards response, the fire department should be prepared and capable of providing all responders on the scene with an SCBA that is immediately ready to be put in-service. It is also worth noting that not all IDLH, CBRN, and other atmospheres requiring respiratory protection are located inside of a structure.
