I am doing a code compliance review of a building and am wondering what the requirements are for fire-rated doors for electrical rooms. Does anyone know where in NFPA it would state these requirements?
I'm not familiar with a specific door rating requirement for all electrical rooms, but I'd start in NFPA 70 just to make sure the National Electric Code doesn't specify this?
If not, NFPA 101, the Life Safety Code section 8.7 covers Special Hazards, and one might consider some electrical rooms to have a degree of hazard greater than that normal to the general occupancy of the building(22.214.171.124)? The appendix speaks of the special hazards as being areas storing combustibles or flammables, or containing heat producing equipment, etc. No mention of electrical, but your local AHJ may have a different idea? Of course if the door opens into a corridor or means of egress, the requirements may just be part of the general requisite protection.
There are a few provisions for fire-rated construction at electrical rooms. See Article 450.21(B); Article 450.42 & 450.43(A); Article 502.100(A)(1); Article 645.4(5) with reference to NFPA 75, Chapter 5; Article 700.10(D); Article 708.11(B); and Article 708.20(B).
