Section 12.4.2 of the 2016 edition of NFPA 72 defines Level 1 pathway survivability as follows:

Level 1 shall consist of pathways in buildings that are fully protected by an automatic sprinkler system in accordance with NFPA 13 with any interconnecting conductors, cables, or other physical pathways installed in metal raceways.

NEC Chapter 760 has language that would allow NPLFA and PLFA fire alarm cables to be installed without conduit above 7' so long as protected by the building construction.

Is the intent of Level 1 pathway survivability to have all fire alarm wiring in conduit regardless of what Article 760 states?
