In a fully sprinklered building, is it the intent of the code not to have to sprinkler a pump room housing an electrical driven fire pump when the total encloser is 2hour rated?
NFPA - 20 - 2019 (188.8.131.52) & (184.108.40.206) says about having the sprinkler in fire pump room if the pump room / building is having an electric driver and a diesel engine. The same shall be as per ordinary / extra hazard group occupancy and sprinkler shall be installed in accordance with NFPA - 13.
Protection is required for fire pump(s) from all other areas of the building by 2-hour fire-rated construction. If the pump room and adjacent areas are protected with an automatic sprinkler system, the separation recommendation can be reduced to 1-hour fire-rated construction.
Locate the fire pumps on the first floor or a basement level of the building so direct access to the pump from the street level is possible. Consider flood exposure to the pump when it is located in a below grade level.
As per FM (Factory Mutual), automatic sprinkler shall be installed in fire pump room, where engine driven pump and electrical driven pump are available, along with 1 hour or 2 hour fire separation of fire pump room.
In contrast; you could discuss with local AHJ for sprinkler installation in fire pump room to have a way forward.
Hope this helps.
