Are Sprinklers required in Cupola's

Question asked by on Feb 4, 2019

Working on a project which is an existing building (old late 1800s building). It's being converted into 97 apartments. Building is wood construction. The building previously used Cupola's and as part of the historic requirements of the building, the Cupola's will remain. The architect show's them as being completely outside the envelope on the roof. Only some of the Cupola's will be used for mechanical ventilation. NFPA 13 (2013) the edition in force in my State doesn't mention anything about Cupola's. Does anyone have any experience with this? Do the Cupola's need to be protected with sprinkler heads? The area of the cupola's are approximately 16 sq. feet about 4x4.
