Access Controlled Egress

Question asked by jmueller on Mar 14, 2019

I have an application where full height revolving doors are proposed in a Use Group B building with a total occupancy load of 3,200.  They are requesting controlled egress and ingress access (both in and out), with card readers. Noted in the 2012 edition of the NFPA Life Safety Code, 7.2.1.6.2, egress shall be permitted to be equipped with electrical lock hardware that prevents egress, but, it must comply with, as well as others, condition #1 which requires a sensor provided on the egress side, to unlock the door (turnstile) upon detection of an approaching occupant.  The sensor requirement contradicts the intend to control the normal conditions egress without using an authorized card.

My question is, can egress be controlled electronically through full height revolving doors?
