ESFR Equivalency

Question asked by edteer on Jul 9, 2019

We currently have an installation of ESFR pendent sprinklers, 165 degree F, K=14.0, dated 1998, in a warehouse area, that have been submitted for testing.  One of the twelve tested sprinklers submitted has been classified as abnormal, with an unacceptable releasing mechanism response time of 21.68 seconds.

The owner of the property has asked an interesting question of us.  We would like to know if the existing ESFR sprinklers, as installed per their listing and NFPA code requirements, would be considered acceptable as standard pendent spray sprinklers, based on the spacing, temperature rating, and deflector distance being equivalent to the requirements of the NFPA 13, 2012 edition.
