Protection of cable spread room is replaced by automatic fixed water based suppression system

Question asked by skkim1 on Jul 30, 2019

NFPA 804

Reference: 10.4.1.2, 10.4.1.3

F.I. No.: 804-19-01

Background: Protection of cable spread room is replaced by automatic fixed water based suppression system, instead of carbon dioxide extinguishing system. The cable spread room is subdivided by five(5) zone due to available water supply as per NFPA 15, 7.1.10. Regarding this, section 10.4.1.2 states that suppression system shall be zoned to limit the area of protection to that which the drainage system can handle with any two adjacent systems actuated, and section 10.4.1.3 states that deluge and water spray systems shall be hydraulically designed with each zone calculated with the largest adjacent zone flowing. And NFPA 15, A.7.1.10.2 specify three(3) systems.

Question 1: Is it meant by three(3) systems to operate simultaneously as NFPA 15, A.7.1.10.2 or case 1 of attachment.(refer to attachment)

Question 2: Is it the intent that meaning of “any two adjacent systems” is two(2) systems including spray system for firing area as case 2 of attachment.(refer to attachment)

Question 3: If the answer to question 1 is no, what is meant by section 7.1.10.2 and 7.1.10.3
