I have 2 large sound booths in our building. they are the size of a small room 150 square ft. I was told I needed sprinkler head installed in each one.
I take it the building has a fire sprinkler system
If yes the rooms are required protection in them.
Almost any enclosure you have/ make is required fire sprinkler protection.
Or if the booth ceiling is lower than the building ceiling, where the sprinklers are,,,
You can remove the booth ceiling and that should give you protection.
Hearsay without technical support is hard to be evidence for a debate.
Building safety codes for existing buildings generally do not necessarily mandate automatic sprinkler protection for small renovations in existing non-sprinklered buildings. The interior finishes for sound reduction materials on the walls and ceilings are to comply with the requirements for new construction.
But the law complicates things—and with good reason, of course. We apply for construction permits, inspections and certificates of occupancy for new construction and alterations. And our work requires review, during the design and construction, by an “authority having jurisdiction” (AHJ).
the existing room has sprinkler systems in them however we installed completely enclosed sound booths for hearing exams.
150 sq ft sound booth?
Most are closet size.
I would say yes, unless it messes up the the integrity of the booth, and workings of it.
After you have given more information, I could reply with more clarification.
I had seen these booths that in health care facilities before. When the ceiling of the booth was not integral with the existing room's ceiling and the booth was free standing, I treated the booths as furniture. I did not require sprinklers in the booths when the existing sprinkler heads were mounted 18" above the top of the booths and provided coverage over the booths. You may have to rearrange the sprinkler head to accomplish this.
Yes, if the building has an approved NFPA 13 system in place, I would guarantee the local AHJ will require sprinklers in these rooms.
