Question about Confined Space Rescue. What is the best practice or recommendation on wearing SCBA vs SAR during a Confined Space Rescue Incident. When should you wear one vs the other? What's the breakover point? Thank you,
I would think that if you have SAR, you'd need to evaluate the situation to find if it can be more effective. Clearly a benefit of SAR is that you cut down on the size of persons making entry by removing the cylinder and pack. Also, the supply is pretty much unlimited compared to a finite cylinder supply. But, SAR may restrict movement in having the attached hose? Our Confined Space Team uses SCBA exclusively, though this could be an issue in situations where the entry and packaging requires longer periods of work than our cylinders allow?
I think, like so much of fire service operations, situations dictate tactics and tools, so rules are not as good as well trained personnel who know the limitations of their abilities and equipment and can make the best decision by evaluating as many factors as they can.
