I just moved into an older home where many of the outlets are 2-prong only. My brother in law says that replacing the outlet with a 2-wire GFI outlet would meet electrical code and does not require the ground wire. Any comments?
Glad to see your not putting blind trust in your brother-in law. But his is one of many safe options.
You local electrical code official (AHJ) may have a specific guidance. The replacement of old outlets is a good idea if the connections are worn, loose or fail to meet the minimal blade tension.
As for grounding, A 2-wire system will always be a 2-wire system. If you follow your brother-in-laws advice, you should also read the instructions from the GFCI receptacle manufacturer. Don't forget to apply the appropriate label indicating "No Equipment Ground".
