NFPA 82-2019 edition

Trash and linen chutes

6.2.2.4 Chute venting.

6.2.2.4.1 A waste or linen chute shall extend (full size) at least 0.92 M (3 ft) above the roof of a building of Type II-000, Type, III, Type IV, or Type V construction.

6.2.2.4.2 The chute shall be permitted to extend less than least 0.92 M (3 ft) above the roof of a building of Type I, Type II-222, or Type II-111 construction, subject to the approval of the AHJ.

6.2.2.4.3 The chute shall be open to the atmosphere, with the opening being the same cross-sectional area as the chute.

6.2.2.4.4 The portion of the chute between the highest intake door and the top of the chute vent shall be permitted to be offset a maximum of 90 degrees from the plumb, subject to the approval of the AHJ.

My two questions are:

  1. Is the vent area requirement intended to facilitate smoke venting, or is it intended as explosion venting?
  2. Is a rooftop exhaust fan permitted to substitute for the required vent area?
