I wonder large fire pumps, 4500 gpm or 5000 gpm split case horizontal, are commonly provided in real world projects. I am not sure there are demands for such high capacity pumps in the industry. In my experience, never used single large pump, instead used multiple small or medium size pumps, e.g. 2 x 2500 gpm.
I am working on a project requiring 4500 or 5000 gpm fire water flow, but not sure whether I should provide 2 x 50% pumps of 1 x 100% pump. I heard that 1 x 100% would have more benefit than 2 x 50% not only in space wise, but also in electrical switchgear and cable cost wise. I found that there are a few suppliers who have 4500 & 5000 gpm models, but not sure they actually produce them. And, I expect that it will take longer time for manufacturing such pumps than the time for smaller pumps. Is there anything else I should consider when using 4500 or 5000 gpm fire pumps?
It will be appreciate if I can have some thoughts from who has experience on this.
